Supervisor: Dr Tanya Filer

College: Hughes Hall

Biography:

Alex graduated from the University of Warwick with a degree in History. He then entered the Teach First Leadership Development Programme and became a Year 2 teacher in Thurrock. Alex experienced firsthand the challenges facing teachers, school leaders, pupils and parents in economically disadvantaged areas and developed a strong interest in educational policy. He also completed an internship at the Department for Education, carrying out research into educational disadvantage and proposed new technical qualifications.

In 2018, Alex moved to Northeast India to work as a project manager for an international charity. He coordinated efforts in the UK and India to develop schools’ infrastructure, curriculum and teaching. With a wide portfolio, Alex also set up a grant-making scheme for advising, funding and monitoring locally-run projects such as a textile-manufacturing collective and a community children’s centre. After living and working in India, Alex’s policy interests have broadened and he hopes to explore a wide range of issues through the MPP programme. In his free time, Alex plays the drums, enjoys watching films and loves a pub quiz.
