September 17th, 2022, marks 30 years since the sudden death of Judith Shklar (1928-1992), Professor of Political Theory and John Cowles Professor of Government at Harvard University. Shklar was a twentieth-century political thinker who redefined and interrogated central concepts in the history of political thought, including utopia, ideology, citizenship, liberalism, cruelty, and injustice. Known by her friends as ‘Dita’, Shklar was popular among fellow political theorists. Today we continue to grapple with the legacy of Shklar, particularly the relationship between her experience of exile and her focus on evil, as well as her distinctively negative and sceptical methodology. This conference brings together specialists to discuss Shklar's work and what it means to us today.

The conference will be held in the Audit Room, King's College Cambridge.
