Political Theory and the History of Political Thought

Biography

Jared's work at POLIS addresses practices and ideas of anticolonial solidarity, in both their contemporary instantiations and historical lineages. He is currently focusing on the writings and activism of José Martí, Anténor Firmin, and W.E.B. Du Bois. All three were sometimes radical political actors who critiqued hegemonic modes of solidarity as exclusive and hierarchical, and developed alternative models of solidarity to link local struggles against colonial domination around the world. Recovering and placing them in dialogue allows Jared to identify anticolonial solidarity as a distinct type of solidarity, one that both challenges top-down models of cosmopolitanism in international political theory and excavates a crucial but neglected chapter in the global history of solidarity.
