2023 PhD Fieldwork Photography Competition Winners
The Department of Politics and International Studies is pleased to announce the winners of the 2023 PhD Fieldwork Photography Competition.
These photographs showcase images taken by our PhD students whilst carrying out their fieldwork. We received some fantastic entries, but the judges decided on the following 3 winning images.
First prize
Young residents of Jeddah’s old town with consoles outdoors by Bruno Schmidt-Feuerheerd, PhD candidate, Politics and International Studies
“Young residents of Jeddah’s old town with consoles outdoors. As part of the ongoing reconstruction of Jeddah’s old town, this space will soon disappear to be replaced with upscale boutique cafés.”
Second prize
Families, living in encampments and settlements of the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra" by Beatriz Santos Barreto, PhD candidate, Centre of Latin American Studies.
"Families, living in encampments and settlements of the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra, donated 20 tons of produce to collectives that distribute meals in the city. The produce was included in their mística and blessed by Leonardo Boff and Yalorixá Iyagunã Dalzira."
Third prize
A subsistence fisherwoman by Nikita Hiralal, PhD candidate, Centre of Development Studies.
"A subsistence fisherwoman at the beginning of the evening shift. She wears a t-shirt from a protest march that reads; “Save the People Save the Oceans No to Oil & Gas Exploration”.
