The Department’s intellectual diversity is anchored by seven specialised Centres. These hubs drive research and academic excellence across disciplines, including political thought, gender politics, human rights, the developing world, and the Global South.

Centre of African Studies (CAS)
The Centre serves as a global focal point for Africa related research in the social sciences, humanities, and biological sciences.
Centre of Development Studies (CDS)
CDS provides a focus for students wishing to undertake an MPhil or PhD in the area of development and the changing reality of a developing world.
Centre for Gender Studies (UCCGS)
UCCGS is a multidisciplinary centre for research and teaching with a broad spectrum of approaches to the understanding gender and sexuality in humans.
Centre of Governance and Human Rights (CGHR)
CGHR is a multidisciplinary research centre committed to advancing thought and practice in global justice and human wellbeing in the 21st century.
Centre of Latin American Studies (CLAS)
CLAS is committed to the study and research of Latin America across a wide range of disciplines.
Cambridge Centre for Political Thought (CCPT)
Run jointly by POLIS and History, CCPT is the centre for the history of political thought, political theory, and intellectual history at Cambridge.
Centre of South Asian Studies (CSAS)
CSAS is a world-renowned research centre whose teaching and research focus on the regions of South and Southeast Asia.
