Department of Politics and International Studies (POLIS)

 

 

This annual lecture takes place in memory of Sir Francis Harry Hinsley (1918-1998), the Founding Director of the Centre of International Studies (1975–1987) which is now part of the Department of Politics and International Studies (POLIS). Hinsley was a former student and later Master of the College (1979-1989) and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge (1981-1983). Heworked as a cryptanalyst at Bletchley Park during the Second World War and was a leading figure in the history of international relations. St John's College hosts the Hinsley Memorial Lecture in conjunction with the Department of Politics and International Studies on an international relations topic every year, usually in November, and all members of the University are warmly invited to attend.

2022 Hinsley Memorial Lecture

The 22nd Hinsley Memorial Lecture is entitled Viewing Economics through a Moral Lens and took place in the Old Divinity School at St John’s College on Tuesday, 18 October 2022.

The lecture was given by Professor Ashoka Mody, Charles and Marie Robertson Visiting Professor in International Economic Policy at Princeton University.

Ashok Mody is Charles and Marie Robertson Visiting Professor in International Economic Policy at the School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University.   He is author of EuroTragedy: A Drama in Nine Acts.  He has was previously Deputy Director in the International Monetary Fund’s Research and European Departments.  He has also worked at the World Bank, AT&T’s Bell Laboratories, and the Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum.
