Module Title: Gender in/and International Politics

Module LeaderDr Shruti Balaji

Module Description:

This course explores how gender matters in the study and practice of International Politics. Grounded in feminist theories, it equips students to examine critically how gender informs, intersects with, and challenges the field of International Relations. Throughout, the course engages with plural understandings of gender as intersecting with global structures and hierarchies. In the first half of the course, we focus on the epistemological, methodological, and ethical challenges and possibilities that shape the study of gender in international politics. In the second half, students will apply these theoretical foundations to a range of substantive areas, including transnational advocacy, global solidarity movements, security and war, political economy, and climate change. It offers a deep exploration of the ideas, institutions, and themes through which gender has shaped and has been shaped by the “international”.
