Department of Politics and International Studies (POLIS)

Joko Susanto is a PhD candidate and an Indonesia’s LPDP Scholar at the University of Cambridge's Department of Politics and International Studies (POLIS). His research delves into the origins and structures of the interlinked dynamics between the ideas of progress and the quests for status in Indonesia’s emancipation as an emerging power/nation. Broadening his scope, Joko is keen on investigating the ‘catch-up nationalism’ of the newly emerging powers/nations, the ‘geopolitics of emancipation’ in the Indo-Pacific, and the dynamics of ‘emancipative politics’ and ‘catch-up strategy’ in globalised world/late modernity. Before his time at Cambridge, Joko founded and served as the executive director of the Emerging Indonesia Project (EIP), a non-governmental initiative aimed at enhancing policy awareness and public understanding of Indonesia's transformation as an emerging power/nation. He earned an MSc in Global Politics from the London School of Economics (LSE) and a BA in International Relations from Universitas Airlangga (UA).
