Securing funding to support graduate study is a separate (though related) procedure to the academic application. There are a number of funding opportunities available, but all are extremely competitive. It is not unusual for applicants who are made a conditional offer of a place to find themselves without the necessary funds to actually commence their study.

University funding

There are many funding opportunities at Cambridge from a wide variety of sources including the Cambridge Trust, Gates Cambridge, Colleges, Departments, Research Councils and central University funds.

The Postgraduate Admissions Office publishes information about the University's central funding competitions for Graduate Students which includes how to apply, deadlines and other useful details. You can find information about possible sources of funding on the Postgraduate Admissions website's funding page

Search for funding opportunities

The Postgraduate Funding Search is for available funding opportunities.

Applicants who are interested in studying an aspect of Anglo-American Relations or US foreign policy should also be aware of the following source of funds run from Magdalene College: The Roosevelt Scholarship.

Applicants who are interested in working on topics related to twentieth-century British or international history, and/or with sources at the Churchill Archives Centre, may be interested in an MPhil studentship offered by Churchill College. Candidates for this studentship should be UK residents or have UK nationality.  They must have applied to Churchill College as their first choice college through the University Applicant Portal.

In order to be considered for University funding, applicants must:

  • apply by the funding deadlines
  • tick the box on the application form relating to the funding for which they would like to be considered
  • submit a curriculum vitae
  • submit a research proposal
  • submit two academic references
  • submit a personal reference (Gates Scholarship applicants only)

CamFunds - Funding Search Tool

There are hundreds of awards available for Graduate Students at the University, but it can be difficult to find which ones you are eligible for. To help with this search the University has developed CamFunds, a funding search tool which allows you to enter some of your details and pull up a list of funding which might be suitable.
