Historical Global Governance - Dr Giovanni Mantilla

This module focuses on the history of “global governance,” understood as the attempt to organize the world through international institutions, law, and norms since the nineteenth century. We will study such a history through the prism of core debates entertained by scholars of international relations, international history, and international law about the origins and transformation of global governance across time and across areas. The broad learning goals are: to convey the complex, contested, and deeply historical nature of international organization; to spark discussion among participants about more or less satisfactory ways to “make sense of” (argue about, theorize) global governance; and to motivate original research in this area. Topics of focus will include: global governance before the twentieth century, the postwar(s) law and organization of war and peace; the laws of war; human rights law; and international law of trade and development.
