Department of Politics and International Studies (POLIS)

The Department of Politics and International Studies is pleased to announce the winners of the 2022 PhD Fieldwork Photography Competition.

These photographs showcase images taken by our PhD students whilst carrying out their fieldwork.  We received some fantastic entries, but the judges decided on the following 3 winning images (please click on the place to see the full photo):

First place

Tessa Laing, PhD candidate, The Centre for Development Studies

"A friend in Amuru, Northern Uganda teaches me to grind sesame butter. Her village has several grinding machines, but she prefers to use her grandmother’s stone."

Second place

Saskia Brechenmacher, PhD candidate, Politics and International Studies

“People waiting to hear Martha Karua, candidate for deputy president for the Azimio la Umoja coalition in Kenya’s 2022 elections, speak at a rally in Nyeri, Kenya. Behind them is a poster for the current deputy president, William Ruto, who is the presidential candidate for the opposing party".

Third place

Nathan Roundy, PhD candidate, Politics and International Studies

"Trans Pride and Protest in London 2022. Between 25-30,000 people gather at the edge of Hyde Park to march for trans rights and pride in July 2022. The march ended at Soho Square, where trans activists and allies spoke about trans joy, sorrow, and called on government bodies to do more to protect trans people from violence. The protest and celebration especially highlighted the years-long wait trans people endure to receive gender affirming care from the NHS gender clinics."

Congratulations to Tessa Laing, Saskia Brechenmacher and Nathan Roundy for your winning photos.
