‘Trustworthy communication of data and evidence: the vital piece of policy-making’

with Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter FRS OBE.

The Department of Politics and International Studies and the Bennett Institute for Public Policy are delighted to invite you to the Cambridge Annual Public Policy Lecture 2022.

The current pandemic has emphasised the key role that statistics play in understanding what is going on around us, whether we are citizens or policy-makers.  But can we trust all these claims?

David Spiegelhalter will look at the way that statistics can be used to try and persuade audiences to think or act in a certain way, and contrast this with efforts to make communication 'trustworthy'.

In particular, are communicators trying to inform, or persuade? Are they providing balance, and acknowledging uncertainties and limitations in the evidence? And are they doing enough to pre-emptively counter misinformation?

There will be the opportunity to ask your own questions – chaired by Dr Cristina Peñasco, Associate Professor in Public Policy at POLIS.

The event will be in-person only at St John’s College, Cambridge, with a video recording made available later on this event page.

Register here.
