Teale Phelps Bondaroff

I am happy to announce that Dr. Teale Phelps Bondaroff (Clare College, 2009) was elected as a municipal councillor for the District of Saanich, British Columbia, Canada on 15 October 2022. Teale completed his PhD in Politics and International Studies at Cambridge on a Commonwealth Scholarship.

In addition to now serving on Saanich Council, Teale has continued to build on his PhD research. He recently returned from research fieldwork in Gabon, where he was studying the strategy of the marine conservation organization Sea Shepherd. This research is part of a project through the Fridtjof Nansen Institute, and includes Dr. Eilstrup-Sangiovanni. Teale is the world leading expert in sea cucumber wildlife crime, and his work on marine plastic pollution made global headlines in 2020.

Teale also chairs the AccessBC Campaign for free prescription contraception in BC, works as the Director of Research for OceansAsia, the Research Coordinator for the BC Humanist Association, and helps build little free libraries around the Greater Victoria Area.
